Welcome to the southernmost hostel in Europe!
Away from the busy, touristic north of the island, Matala Hostel was created by three brothers who wanted to share their love for the laid-back, hippie village of Matala.
The south coast of Crete where the hostel is located, is known for its hippie past, its beautiful beaches and its rich history, and we provide the ideal base from which to discover the area.
The Matala Hostel team knows everything about the area, and we will provide you with any information you might need about hikes, activities and beaches in the area (and there are many!)
Our hostel is only an 8-minute walk from the beautiful sandy beach of Matala and the famous caves which once housed flower children, with many well known artists such as Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, Janis Joplin and others among them. Here, you will find everything you might need for a laid-back, care-free vacation: a bar and a refreshing pool where you can relax after a day of exploring, a fully equipped communal kitchen, indoor and outdoor common areas and lounges, hot showers and Wi-Fi connection throughout the property.
All rooms are spacious and bright, and have en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning. Bunk beds are equipped with linens, towels, privacy curtains and individual lockers.

The staff here were lovely - volunteers from all over the world who were very helpful and kind. The hostel had a nice vibe and was reasonably social and they had events eg. dinners and pub crawls (not the most social hostel I’ve been to, but still good). The 6-bed dorm was nice, with an ensuite and balcony. The beds didn’t have charging points beside them is my only criticism. The pool and lounge chairs were also awesome. The only issue I had was a girl in my womens dorm room bringing guys back at night and

We loved our stay! It was easy to navigate to and staff were friendly upon arrival. Rooms were clean and the people in our shared dorm were considerate and lovely. We made use of the kitchen, the pool (which was amazing) and even the “free store†for mats to use at the beach! Staff helped us navigate the return busses to Heraklion, which was super simple with the bus stop right across the street. Quick walk to the beach and into town for shops as well. Loved it! Would highly recommend!

Interesting place - used to be a hotel, then converted into a hostel so it has a funny atmosphere! Quite clinical, open space as an overhang from its hotel days, no real common area. However, comfy beds, good wifi but the air con was bad so the room was hot. Nice pool & good location in Matala!
