Located in the heart of chinatown in Medan, Semalam at Sun Yat Sen Boutique Hostel is more than just a bed for the night. You may only be here for one night or two before your Bukit Lawang or Lake Toba trip, hence the name Semalam, which means one night in our Bahasa (Language). In which during your short stay in Semalam we will make sure you get to know the hidden charm of our home town.
With options of mixed dorm room and female dorm room and a selection of single pod or double pod, we are the only unique experience hostel in town. We are a privately run capsule hostel that focuses more on the experience of making new connections during travel.
Although we employ a self check-in method, we do intend to socialize with you and cater to whatever you need. So do feel free to tell us how to make your stay more memorable. You might only visit North Sumatra once, after all.
***Property Policies***
Cancellation policy: 1 day before arrival. In case of a late cancellation or No Show, you will be charged the first night of your stay.
Check in from 15:00 to 23:00.
Check out from 10:00 to 12:00 noon.
Payment upon arrival by cash.
Taxes included.
Breakfast not included.
No curfew.
We do not accept customers younger than 18 years of age.
Non smoking.

Semalam is a self check-in hostel. Really standard hostel with clean bathrooms and nice beds.They have a lot of beds available but when I went it was only 2 of us.
The enternece is also where the kitchen / social area is. Basic facilities.
Solid hostel for 1-2 days if you’re heading from Medan to Bukit Lawang and need a place to crash.
Walked around a little bit and found some nice restaurants but overall not much to do in Medan.
Potential for a lot more as there is a big space up stairs

I was surprised by how nice my stastay was! just in medan 1 night before flying out, but this hostel feels VERY safe and I met some cool people. The self check in process is a little weird and I left my payment on the bed which felt weird, but it worked out really well. beds are comfy too. Really cant complain about anything.

It’s a good place if you just need sleeping and nothing else. There’s not staff at all and everything is working by WhatsApp. It’s clean, good bed, good price. 0% sociable and very creepy as not many people Is hosted there.
