Great hostel, good location and nice garden and dogs in the social area.

I was hesitant to write this review, but I feel like it needs to be said. Hostel Lao was a very poor experience. I arrived to find both our shower and toilet broken, and to a room that smelled like mold and mildew with a stained mattress. I had to ask twice for sheets, and was given a couple ratty sheets that didn’t even fit the mattress. The shower in the other room was working, but didn’t have a shower curtain, causing water to spray everywhere and soak the floor. Dogs were barking both evenings, keeping me up. When I went to check out at the scheduled time, nobody was even working. I had to call the owner, and was told that I was “being a little demanding” by expecting to pay him on time and expecting SOMEONE to be working. Seriously? What a joke. Anyone who writes a negative review is also attacked on here, as evidenced on Hostelworld. Maybe if you actually worked and showed up and had a staff and took your hostel seriously, people wouldn’t write honest reviews complaining. Don’t stay here.

The building was lovely with lots of open spaces. Had a large garden which was really nice to chill and meet people. Not the most social hostel but if you want a calmer experience then this is for you (this is what we wanted!). Facilities were very good and the room was very nice and clean. Only con is that there is no reception, everything is discussed via WhatsApp, which is ok but if there is an issue/question sometimes it can take a while to get a response.
